7 Common Shopify Store Design Mistakes That Could Be Costing You Sales
By BlackMaret · 7 min read ·
Good Shopify store design isn't about looking fancy — it's about making it easy to buy. These seven design mistakes show up again and again, and each one quietly pushes shoppers away.
1. A cluttered homepage
Trying to show everything at once means nothing stands out. Pick a clear hero message, feature your best sellers, and remove sections that don't help visitors find or trust your products.
2. Confusing navigation
Menus with too many items, vague labels or deep nesting make products hard to find. Use simple, descriptive collection names and keep the main menu short.
3. Inconsistent branding
Mixing many fonts, colors and image styles makes a store feel unprofessional. Choose a limited palette and two fonts, and apply them consistently across every page.
4. Low-quality or mismatched images
Blurry photos, different backgrounds and inconsistent cropping make products look cheaper than they are. Consistent, well-lit images instantly raise perceived quality.
5. Too many pop-ups
A discount pop-up can work, but stacking newsletter, spin-to-win and chat pop-ups on the first visit frustrates shoppers — especially on mobile. Delay pop-ups and limit them to one.
6. Ignoring page speed
Large images, unused apps and heavy scripts slow your store down. Compress images, remove apps you no longer use and check your store speed report in Shopify regularly.
7. No clear next step
Every page should guide the visitor somewhere: from homepage to collection, collection to product, product to cart. If a page has no obvious button or path forward, visitors drift away.
How to review your own store
Ask someone unfamiliar with your brand to find and buy a specific product while you watch, without helping. Where they hesitate, scroll back or get confused is where your design needs work.
